Magento case study
Bespoke Delivery Engine
A Magento shipping system combining postcode pricing, basket restrictions, product availability and working-day delivery calculations.
01
The challenge
An established UK ecommerce retailer needed a custom Magento shipping system because ordinary flat-rate or table-rate shipping could not represent its delivery operation accurately.
Availability and pricing depended on postcode, basket contents, product availability, dispatch dates and delivery service, alongside Click & Collect eligibility, Saturday restrictions, sample orders and free-delivery thresholds.
02
The solution
The implementation introduced structured delivery-price, postcode-area and town data, supported by repositories and Magento administration interfaces. Postcode outward-code resolution feeds basket-level eligibility flags for Click & Collect, Saturday, standard-only and next-day services.
Sample-only baskets follow their own delivery rules, while mixed and standard baskets account for the earliest product dispatch date. Free-delivery thresholds and full-basket free-shipping promotions are handled without exposing confidential operational rates.
Delivery dates are calculated around working days and UK bank holidays, including applicable substituted dates. The selected delivery information then travels through checkout into the order and its customer communications.
03
The outcome
Customers are offered delivery services that reflect their destination, basket and likely dispatch date rather than a generic shipping rate, while the retailer can manage key delivery rules through Magento administration.
